Production
Production began in 2009 for the film, which was directed by Doug Liman and written by Gary Whitta. The film was produced by Neal H. Moritz and Walter F. Parkes, with Benjamin Melniker as president of production. Paul W. S. Anderson was responsible for the screenplay. Anderson collaborated with Liman on the original script for the film The Punisher, which had been released in 2004. Anderson left the project to work on the original script for the 2010 film Red Dawn, which would later change its setting to the 1980s.
According to Anderson, he received a script from Liman that was "about a high school kid [who] happens to be a mutant." "The story was about teenage mutant kids who had superpowers, and as they started to realize it, a plotline began to unfold", said Anderson. Liman then showed Anderson the original script of The Strain. Anderson rewrote the script into what he described as "an old-school monster movie". Liman called Anderson's script "a real page-turner".
Casting
Actor Danny Trejo was cast in the role of the main antagonist, Gabriel Cortez, after the studio and Liman were impressed by his performance in the 1999 film From Dusk till Dawn. Trejo said, "I’m ready for a change, so why not a change of scenery?" Ultimately, Anderson and Liman decided Trejo "was the right guy to pull this off." The studio liked his "crazy hair" and "strange looks." Liman said of Trejo, "He brings a lot of humanity to what I think are fairly faceless characters."
Visual effects
In March 2011, it was announced that the visual effects were to be done by The Third Floor and Weta Workshop. Weta Workshop created the special effects for the film. Special effects producer Thomas Walsh, who worked on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, was the head of the visual effects team for the film. According to Walsh be359ba680
